Massive Bull Elk in the Mountains – Play by Play

After a long month of September with missed opportunities, close encounters and “would’ve, should’ve, could’ve” we make one more effort!

It’s the last week of season and thankfully Sharon took some time away from running Nock On Archery during peak season to hunt with me for a few more days.

For this hunt, I wanted to let the entire encounter play out uncut so you can experience my “when to and when not to” choices for moving and calling this bull. At first light, we hear some bugles in the distance and attempt to work our way into position to potentially intercept an elk. We continue to hear some elk moving towards us so we repositioned onto a ridge to try and get a shot. I quickly mark the distance of some key terrain features so I am ready for anything. The plan is to let the herd come up naturally into the open draw while we sit in front of some foilage which provided some great back cover. After a short while, we see a monster trailing a cow and calf right into our area. He’s got a hot lady but can curiousity kill the beast? After a few calls he finally gets within range and turns perfectly broadside and I can get my shot off just inside 40 yds.
