Setting up your Silverback release properly is crucial for achieving consistency and accuracy in archery. Even without a pull scale, you can easily adjust your release to suit your needs. In this post, we’ll share John Dudley’s expert advice on setting up the Silverback and fine-tuning it for your shooting style.

Why Proper Setup Matters

Nock On’s Silverback releases are preset to around 17 to 17.5 pounds. This setting suits most archers using a 70-pound bow with an 80% let-off, which typically results in a holding weight of about 14 pounds. Starting with a release set 3.5 to 4 pounds over your holding weight provides a good baseline for adjustments.

Steps to Set Up Your Silverback Release

Initial Setup Without a Scale

  • Position yourself close to a target at eye level.
  • Draw back your bow and let off the safety. If the release activates immediately, the setting is too light.
  • Adjust the tension by inserting an Allen wrench into the release and turning it clockwise to increase the pressure or counterclockwise to decrease it.

Fine-Tuning the Release

  • Draw back and let off the safety. If it takes too much effort to activate, the setting is too tight. Adjust accordingly.
  • Make small adjustments, as the Silverback Plus requires minimal turning for noticeable changes.
  • Aim for the release to go off within 3 to 7 seconds of consistent pulling after letting off the safety.

Key Points to Remember

  • Preload Pressure: Your preload, or the amount of pull before releasing the safety, determines how much tension you need over your bow’s holding weight.
  • Personal Preferences: Adjustments may vary based on your bow’s cam system and your preferred pressure at full draw.
  • Consistency: Proper setup helps achieve consistent shooting performance. Regularly check and adjust to maintain optimal settings.

Practical Tips for Silverback Users

  • Experiment with Adjustments: Don’t be afraid to make adjustments. Understand the impact of each turn and find your optimal setting.
  • Secure the Setting: Once you’ve found the ideal tension, use the set screw to secure the adjustment and prevent further movement.
  • Practice Consistently: Regular practice with the Silverback will help you maintain and improve your form. Watch our videos on becoming more consistent with your release for additional tips.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

  • Immediate Release Activation: If the release activates too quickly after letting off the safety, increase the tension slightly.
  • Excessive Pull Effort: If you feel like you’re pulling the bow in half, decrease the tension.
  • Inconsistent Activation: This often relates to form breakdowns. Ensure your technique remains consistent and correct any form issues.
