This Alberta Crown land edged with premium agriculture hunt from 2024 showcases everything that makes mule deer hunting in this country so challenging.

After patterning this mature buck for few days through, thick untouched timber, wheat and canola fields, I finally got the opportunity of a lifetime… but it required serious tactical discipline.

The canola stood chest-high, making any stalk impossible. You’d need to be within five yards for a shot, and there’s no way to move through that crop without destroying it or spooking the deer.

So I set up on the edge of crown land at 8:30 a.m. and waited. For 10 hours.

When you locate a mature mule deer, blowing him out of the country is the worst mistake you can make. Instead, I positioned myself between his bedding area and water, kept the wind right, used solid backgrounds for concealment, and just waited.

When he emerged at nearly 5 p.m., the Hoyt RX-9 and T2 broadhead combo executed perfectly. The buck ducked right into the shot for a clean, ethical harvest after days of pursuit.

Real-world hunting strategy in action!
