Previous seasons of School of Nock covered technique, bow building, and arrow tuning. Those three pillars form the foundation of becoming a well-rounded archer and bowhunter.
But at the center of it all is you. You’re the one who holds it together, refines it, and continues to grow.
This season, we’re building you from the inside out.
I’m introducing a new trifecta: Thoughts on Training, Motivating the Mind, and Expanding Your Archery Knowledge through Bowcabulary. We begin with one concept: building habits by creating your habitat.
Why Habitat Matters
Recently, someone asked me why my personal training spaces are so isolated. The question got me thinking about my own path. I’ve learned I need to be isolated to stay consistent with my training, so I’ve built habitats that help me form habits across all areas of my development.
This mindset goes back to my football days. When I wanted to become a college quarterback, my coach gave me a key to the gym. I’d go in alone, turn on the lights, and throw footballs into laundry baskets. I worked on my three-step drops, five-step drops, and rollouts with no one watching.
When I wanted to become a professional archer, I did the same. I built my own space where I could focus without distractions. That’s where I hit flow states during training. That’s where real progress happened.
Your First Assignment
Your homework this week is to find your place.
It doesn’t need to be a massive gym or a dedicated shooting range. It can be anywhere you can take off the work hat, step away from family obligations, and focus on one goal.
Deep down, you know what your distractions are. Find the spot where you can escape them. For me, that meant putting my grill next to my outdoor range so I could stay focused even during family time. Small decisions like that add up. I think a lot of people benefit from being away from a Wi-Fi signal so you are locked in on sending arrows instead of sending DMs.
This season is about self-improvement. I want to make 2026 better for the Nock On Nation by helping you improve your archery and strengthen your mental game. It starts with building your habitat for building habits.
